1 Islamabad to Skardu (by flight or by road)
The first step is to travel to the city of Skardu, which is the main gateway to the K2 region. There are daily flights from Islamabad to Skardu, which take about an hour. Alternatively, one can take a scenic drive from Islamabad to Skardu, which takes about 22 hours, passing through the picturesque Karakoram Highway.
2 Skardu to Askole (by road)
From Skardu, you need to travel by jeep to the village of Askole, which is the last inhabited settlement before the start of the trek. The journey takes around 6 to 7 hours on a rough and bumpy road.
3 Askole to K2 Base Camp (trek)
The trek from Askole to K2 Base Camp takes around 7 to 10 days, depending on the pace of the trek and the acclimatization schedule. The trek passes through several stunning valleys, including the Braldu and Baltoro valleys, and crosses several high passes, including the famous Gondogoro La pass.
4 K2 Base Camp (climbing)
Once you reach K2 Base Camp, you will need to set up a base camp and prepare for the climb. This can take several days, as climbers need to acclimatize to the high altitude and get used to the conditions.
5 Climbing K2
The ascent of K2 typically takes around 60 to 75 days, including the time needed for acclimatization, establishing the higher camps, and making summit bids. The climbing route follows the Abruzzi Spur, which is the most commonly used route to the summit.
