The Katpana Cold Desert, also known as the Katpana Desert or the Skardu Desert, is a unique desert located near Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. It is often referred to as a "cold desert" because of its high altitude and freezing temperatures. The Katpana Cold Desert is situated at an elevation of around 2,226 meters (7,303 feet) above sea level and covers an area of approximately 26 kilometers (16 miles). It is known for its breathtaking landscape, with vast stretches of sand dunes and rocky formations set against a backdrop of towering mountains, including the famous Karakoram Range. Despite being located in a region known for its cold climate, the desert experiences extreme temperature variations. During the summer months, temperatures can reach up to 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), while in the winter, they can drop to as low as -25 degrees Celsius (-13 degrees Fahrenheit). This stark contrast in temperatures adds to the uniqueness of the desert. The Katpana Cold Desert attracts a significant number of tourists who visit Skardu and the surrounding areas. Visitors can enjoy activities such as camel rides, jeep safaris, and sandboarding on the sand dunes. The desert is also a popular spot for photographers, as it offers stunning vistas and incredible natural beauty.

    Skardu is the main town in the Skardu District of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. It is well-connected by road and air.
  2. Day 2 Hire a Vehicle
    You can hire a private vehicle or a jeep from Skardu to travel to the Katpana Cold Desert. Jeeps are commonly used due to the rough terrain.
  3. Day 3 Travel on the Skardu-Skardu Road:
    Leave Skardu and head southeast on the Skardu-Skardu Road. This road will lead you towards the desert.
  4. Day 4 Arrive at Katpana:
    Once you reach the village of Katpana, you are near the Katpana Cold Desert. The desert area begins shortly after the village.
